Wine of the Week: Casa Jipi Nebbiolo 2020
In celebration of Latin American Heritage month, I present to you one of my favorite wines from Mexico, by an incredible Mexican woman winemaker Lulu Martinez Ojeda – Casa Jipi (pronounced Hippie).
Casa Jipi is an incredible collab between Rancho Llano Colorado, one of the region’s most important and sought after grape producers, Vinicola Bruma (my favorite winery in Mexico, and one of my faves in the whole wide world), and Lulu Martinez Ojeda a total badass helping put Mexican wines on the map globally. The vision for the brand is to make the best wines with the best grapes at an accessible price – a mission we all can get behind.
Nebbiolo the grape originally comes from Piedmont, Italy, but Baja California (the wine region in Mexico, not the state of California) absolutely excels at Nebbiolo. It is one of the most popular grapes in Mexico, with good reason.
Lets get into the wine.
Looks like: deep, velvety purple. Rich AF. Not demure, not cutesy.
Smells like: eating fresh ripe black cherries and blackberries...but in a hookah lounge. It is fruity and smoky and minty and awesome.
Tastes like: your favorite black cherry dark chocolate dessert, with velvety tannins that make your whole mouth really feel this wine.
We all have a little hippie in us, and this wine makes you want to indulge in it. Look out for Casa Jipi, and add Mexican Nebbiolos to your “must try” list – you wont regret it!
