Wine of the Week: 2023 Klein Goederust Chardonnay

sip

Klein Goederust has a special place in my heart. The owner Paul has been an incredibly helpful mentor on my journey in wine in South Africa. Paul and his winemaker / farm manager Rodney grew up on a farm not far from Klein Goederust. Their parents were laborers. Paul got a scholarship to school, saved his money for years and purchased Klein Goedersust in 2019. The property was dilapidated and the vines were diseased, but the vision was clear. Paul and Rodney replanted the vines and restored the property, then opened to the public in 2021. The rest is history!

What I appreciate most about Klein Goederust is the unwavering commitment to quality. As Black people in the wine industry, there isn’t a lot of room for error. My mom used to say, you have to be twice as good to be half as well-received. Klein Goederust’s commitment to quality wines really shines, and sets an important standard in the industry.

Speaking of quality wine, let’s get into it: I love their Chardonnay in particular, as it is a more delicate style than the overly oaky, buttery Chardonnays you get in the US. It was gently oaked, has citrus aromas and stone fruit flavors, and complexity that is approachable and delightful. I love pairing it with a charcuterie board, especially soft rich cheeses, on a sunny day.

The wines are available across South Africa, unfortunately they don’t ship to the US (yet!). Next time you're in Franschhoek, definitely pay Klein Goederust a visit! You won’t be disappointed. Cheers <3
