The Holiday Spirit(s): Tips for Staying Hangover-Free This Season
The holiday season is here, bringing with it festive gatherings, endless toasts, and plenty of opportunities to indulge. While enjoying the celebrations is important, waking up with a pounding headache and regrets isn’t part of the plan. This is a marathon, not a sprint! Fortunately, you can enjoy your holiday cheer while minimizing the risk of a hangover by following some simple tips:
(Quick note: I’m a lawyer by training, not a doctor — which is why I need to include this disclaimer! This is not medical advice—just a compilation of what I’ve found helpful in my personal exploration of natural remedies to help me enjoy wine without pain. Please consult a healthcare professional if you’re unsure about trying any of these methods.)
1. Drink in Moderation
The easiest way to avoid a hangover is to limit how much you drink. You don’t need to take 3 shots in 30 minutes, friend :) Sipping your drink slowly not only makes it last longer but also gives your body time to process the alcohol. Choose quality over quantity and savor your beverage.
2. Alternate Alcohol with Water
I learned this in college at 17 years old and it is still one of the best drinking tips! Alcohol dehydrates your body, and dehydration is a major contributor to hangover symptoms. To counteract this, alternate each alcoholic drink with a glass of water. Not only does this keep you hydrated, but it also slows down your alcohol consumption—win-win.
3. Consider Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is known for its ability to bind toxins in the digestive system, potentially helping to reduce alcohol absorption. While it won’t stop a hangover entirely, taking it before, during, or after your drinking session could offer some support. Just remember to consult your healthcare provider before trying it, especially if you’re on any medications.
4. Rehydrate with Electrolytes
Alcohol can deplete your body’s electrolyte levels, leading to fatigue, headaches, and muscle cramps. Replenish lost electrolytes by drinking a coconut water, or an electrolyte tablet dissolved in water before bed and when you wake up. Staying hydrated with the right balance of minerals will help you feel better faster.
5. Show Your Liver Some Love with Milk Thistle
Milk thistle has long been used as a natural remedy to support liver health. It contains an active ingredient called silymarin, which may help protect your liver from damage caused by alcohol. Consider taking milk thistle supplements before and after drinking for added liver support. As always, consult your doctor to ensure it’s safe for you.
Bonus Tips
Don’t drink on an empty stomach. Eating a meal rich in healthy fats and protein before drinking can slow the absorption of alcohol.
Get plenty of sleep. A well-rested body is better equipped to recover from a night of indulgence
The holidays are about creating joyful memories—not nursing a hangover. With a little preparation and mindful drinking, you can enjoy every party and wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the next celebration. Cheers to a healthy and happy holiday season! 🥂🎄
